Khadafi and the death penalty. What do they have to do with ego and porn?

I recently happened upon a video of Khadafi’s last moments. I’m a little surprised that You Tube would allow that sort of thing on their site. I thought I was going to see a video of people marching passed his body that was set on display, but no. The video was literally of his last moments. I remember hearing reporters talk about waiting to learn the cause of his death, as if it really made a difference whether the bullet to his chest, or the one in his head delivered him into the afterlife. I thought that he had been shot killed in a barrage of bullets, but it turns out that he was shot, then captured alive. This is point at which the video begins. The people, the “freedom fighters,” or whatever they’re called, were all screaming, and shouting and jumping around his nearly lifeless body, all-the-while firing their weapons into the air in celebration.
At the beginning of the video Khadafi’s head isn’t bleeding, but by the end of it it’s bleeding profusely. In a couple of the brief glimpses of his face you can see the agony in his expression.
But his physical pain isn’t what’s troubling. It’s the fact that, although he may have be one as well, he’s surrounded by animals who he surely knew would end his life.
I don’t know how good, or how bad of a man Khadafi was. But the rub is this: I knew his face. He’s been around my whole life. He, for better or worse, was a major figure in our world, and seeing the violent, humiliating end of someone you recognize, is disturbing.
I’m a soldier, and there may be a point in my life where I will have to take another person’s life. I’m ok with that because, probably, that person will be trying to do the same thing to me. But with Khadafi, he was, at the point of capture, a prisoner of war. You may argue that it wasn’t a “war,” but that’s just semantics. He was a prisoner. I don’t think I could ever kill a defenseless person, no matter how bad he is.
The coroner concluded that it was a gunshot to the head that killed him. Someone, while he was captive, put a pistol to Khadafi’s forehead and pulled the trigger. What kind of person can do this?
I’ve thought about what I would do to someone who ever harmed someone I love? Would I kill them? Part of me says I’d destroy them without thinking twice, whether they had the capacity to defend themselves or not. But really, at the moment of truth, would I pull the trigger? Something about that seems wrong. Incorrect. It’s something about the anger, the emotional response to effect a result. But what’s the result? To end a threat? We have life sentences. I think I feel as though murdering a person, with our without what we call justification, is simply a show of ego, as if to say “I dominate! I win! You lose! Vengeance is mine!” What more could it be? But the thing is, a dead man can’t hear you. He can’t say “you win.” He can’t say “You’re right, I was wrong.” So, it’s not about him being wrong. It’s about you being right. And he gave you the chance to be right. Ego.
On a lighter note, however, do you think it’s strange that we can watch a man be murdered on a public website, practically as it happens, but show two people making love is unacceptable?
